Typical Umbrian village, one of the most famous in Italy, Assisi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is famous for being the land of St. Francis. Characterized by a beautiful fortress (which dates back to 1183 and was commissioned by Frederick Barbarossa), it also has a rich Civic Art Gallery housed in the beautiful Palazzo Vallemani, overlooking the scenic Piazza del Comune; it preserves some paintings by Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci, known as the "Perugino". An absolute must-see is the extraordinary Temple of Minerva, built in 30 BC. according to the papers: the German scholar Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was enchanted by its colonnade, which is still in perfect condition. The main attraction to and appeal of Assisi is undoubtedly the Basilica of San Francesco, located on Mount Subasio and recognized as a symbol of Christianity. Of extraordinary artistic importance, the Basilica is made up of two superimposed churches: in the upper one there are the famous frescoes by Giotto illustrating the life of San Francesco and other works by Cimabue, while in the lower one there is the humble crypt with the tomb of the saint.
