Bergamo

Located in the eastern part of Lombardy, the city of Bergamo is divided into two distinct parts: the upper city (which makes up the historic center) and the lower city. The walls that surround the upper city have recently been declared a World Heritage Site, while the Accademia Carrar is of great importance as one of the main Italian art galleries, which houses paintings by well-known artists, including Botticelli, Pisanello, Raffaello, Mantegna, Moroni , Bellini, Moroni, Baschenis, Canaletto and many others. Since 1991 the GAMeC (Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art) has been added, with works by Morandi, De Chirico, Kandinsky. The city theater and the Donizetti Museum are dedicated to Gaetano Donizetti, a famous nineteenth-century composer and opera player born in Bergamo, while his home has been transformed into a museum. The presence of the Bergamo-Orio al Serio airport in the city has increased its importance; this airport is a hub for some of the main low-cost airlines.
