Otranto

Whether its name derives from the classical Greek 'Ydrous, from the Latin Hydruntum, or from the Byzantine Ydrentòs is still not clear, but we are absolutely certain of one thing: Otranto deserves to be seen at least once in a lifetime. This little gem in the easternmost point of the “boot” is an area rich in Caribbean-like beaches, history and culture. The Aragonese Castle, built between 1485 and 1498 by Fernando I of Aragon, is undoubtedly evidence of the busy traffic of cultures that this town has experienced. Today it is a splendid base for theater, exhibitions and cultural events. Another stop to mark on your itinerary is the Church of San Pietro. Its name is presumably to be attributed to the passage of St. Peter during his journey from Palestine to Rome. The great variety of attractions that Otranto offers is not limited only to the historical importance of its monuments. The pride of this town is certainly its sea. The seaside resorts are characterized by fantastic nature and almost fairytale scenarios: the Baia dei Turchi, the Alimini Lakes, Torre di Sant’Andrea and Torre dell’Orso, are just some of the seaside jewels that this town offers.
