La Spezia

Overlooking the so-called "Gulf of poets", in the bay that starts at Lerici and reaches Portovenere, the Ligurian capital La Spezia is part of the Cinque Terre national park. Due to its strategic and defensive position, its history inevitably is connected to the sea: the port has developed over time and has become one of the largest in the Mediterranean Sea, with one of the richest arsenals in the Navy. Its historic center is typically Ligurian: full of aromas and colors, through the classic serpentine alleys it opens up to the beautiful promenade, bordered by a park. The architecture of most of the buildings in the city is Art Nouveau, a style visible both on the facades of the buildings and in the elegant gardens. For fans of the genre, the Naval Museum is a must-see, with its exhibition of ships and tools of the Italian Navy. The Ubaldo Formentini Civic Archaeological Museum is located in the military Castle of San Giorgio, on the other hand, where numerous finds are preserved from the surrounding area relating to a period ranging from Prehistory to the Middle Ages.
