Taranto

The county seat of the homonymous province, also known as the “City of the Two Seas” for its geographical position on the Mar Grande and Mar Piccolo, Taranto hosts the Naval Arsenal and Ilva, an important steel manufacturing and processing plant. The city’s historical center lays on an island connected to the mainland by bridges, one being a swing bridge. A maze of narrow streets, where time seems almost suspended, welcomes visitors into a magical atmosphere. You cannot but take a stroll along the waterfront, enjoying the beautiful panorama of the Gulf of Taranto and seeing the peaks of the Sila on the horizon, weather permitting. The Marino bus stop, located at the Mercantile Port, is right in the center of the city’s attractions. Just take the bridge on Via Napoli and you are already in the old town. Then, heading towards the center, you will come across the Cathedral of San Cataldo, the most ancient in all of Puglia, enchanting with its marvelous mosaics and marble vestibules. The ancient village trail ends with an inevitable visit to Castel S. Angelo, which consists of an Aragonese reconstruction of a former Norman-Swabian-Angevin fortress. Crossing the swing bridge, you end up in the center of the city.
